All About Reiki Treatments

Reiki is made up of two Japanese words:

Rei (meaning 'Higher Power' or 'God's Wisdom') and Ki (meaning 'life force energy')

Reiki is a Japanese relaxation technique that promotes complete relaxation and stress reduction so that the body may heal itself. The idea is that there is an unseen 'life force energy' flowing through all living things. It is our life force energy that keeps us alive and in good health. When that life force energy becomes blocked, health issues are able to form and eventually erupt.

Think of blocked energy like a beaver dam. The dam changes the natural course of the water flow, impeding the flow, starving certain areas of the water needed to bring life to other life forces around it. Not only does the blockage cut off the life force from certain areas, it also swamps other areas causing destruction and chaos. In the same way, if our body's energy centers are blocked the normal and essential flow of Ki will send our body out of alignment and allow the beginnings of various diseases to form.

What happens at a Reiki session

The person receiving Reiki remains fully clothed and lies on a comfortable table while the Reiki practitioner lightly places hands in various positions on or near the body. The person usually experiences relaxation and peacefulness during the hour-long session. Shorter treatments can be given to a person in a hospital bed, recliner or chair.

How Reiki is Used

Reiki seeks to restore order to the body whose energy has become unbalanced. The healing energy of Reiki can be used to provide relief from conditions such as fatigue, pain, anxiety, negative side effects of treatments and medications, joint problems, and other ailments.

Reiki does not replace, but rather is easily integrated with any medical treatment and other therapies to assist in activating a persons inner healing potential. Reiki is now being used in a growing number of hospitals and clinics throughout the United States and throughout the world." (Taken from the Mayo Clinic's website, January 2015.)

A Typical Reiki Session

Sessions are done with client's clothes on.The Reiki session itself runs about 60 minutes with Reiki taking up about 50 minutes of that time. You will lie down on the massage table (on back is preferred but whatever is most comfortable for you works as well!) The room is typically darkened, with quite music playing to promote relaxation.

I begin with a type of 'body scan' technique where my hands are about 6 inches off your body. Through various sensations I can detect energy flows and blocks so that I may pay attention more to those areas during the treatment. I then begin with the light hands-on healing, starting at your head and working my way to your feet. During the treatment I may 'jump around' a bit. Not literally mind you, but I may be working on your knees and then decide to work on the shoulders, or head. This is the Reiki's way of letting the practitioner know what areas need the healing first in order to continue.

Sometimes I do not get to work all the way to the feet as the main issues may be elsewhere on the body. Or, if you come to work on a specific area it may be we spend most of the time working on that area (or not.) At the end of the session I will lightly brush off your arms and legs, then have you sit up when you are ready. Then I will brush off your back lightly and you are encouraged to drink a glass of water to help you awaken and feel alert. During this time we can discuss your feelings and my findings and I will answer any questions you may have.

After the session you will likely find you are quite 'refreshed' and 'energized'. And why wouldn't you? You have just received a great supply of healing energy and replenished your energy levels. I also work on the chakras to ensure they are unblocked and fully charged. You may wish to keep a journal by your bed and write down any dreams or visions that come to you as Reiki can unlock thoughts and ideas in the next few days to come. Sometimes issues get worse before they get better but usually they feel better quite quickly!

Reiki does not cause pain. It helps the body heal. It is normal to feel warmth or tingle sensations during the treatment. It is also normal to have heightened emotions and to suddenly (and often briefly) feel sad, mad, happy, excited etc. Many clients have cried during a session without knowing why (this is an emotional blocked being released. Emotional blockages cause illness and fatigue and Reiki can help the body 'let go' of this un-needed, negative energy.)

The Mayo Clinic on Reiki

"Reiki (ray key) is a non-invasive healing method that promotes relaxation, enhances the body's natural healing abilities, and fosters mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Like Healing Touch, Reiki is based on the idea of an energy field that permeates the human body."

Johns Hopkins on Reiki

"Reiki is a very specific form of energy healing, in which hands are placed just off the body or lightly touching the body, as in “laying on of hands.” Reiki can also be done “long-distance,” as a form of prayer. According to many versions of its origin, Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese seeker of spiritual truths, brought the Reiki method of healing into human awareness in 1922 after a deep spiritual experience. He is said to have begun teaching others after a serious earthquake hit Japan and he felt urged to spread his knowledge.

In a Reiki session, the practitioner is seeking to transmit Universal Life Energy to the client. The intention is to create deep relaxation, to help speed healing, reduce pain, and decrease other symptoms you may be experiencing.

As you can see, many well known, respected and qualified organizations and institutions are recognizing Reiki as having healing benefits. Reiki is often used in cancer care and pre and post surgery cases.

Issues Reiki Can Help

Reiki is used for body, mind and soul wellness. You may have a physical ailment that requires healing and it may be a result of a physical incident or perhaps an emotional one that has manifested into a physical condition. You may have an emotional or spiritual issue that needs to resolve. Reiki works on its own, knowing exactly where to go and what to do. A good Reiki practitioner knows this and trusts in being guided by the Reiki energy. Reiki can never be done for bad, only good. A true practitioner will allow the Reiki to flow as it needs to, and create a peaceful and healing environment at the same time. Reiki has been used for:

  • Stress Management and Increase Energy Levels
  • Boosting Immune Health
  • Dealing with Aches & Pains (Chronic & Acute)
  • Balancing Chakras
  • Helping Body Heal Physically and Emotionally
  • Clear Energy Blocks
  • Pre and Post Surgery and Hospital Treatments
  • Cancer Therapy (helping with side effects of radiation & chemo therapy)

It has many uses and because it is so gentle it helps your body relax to the state it needs to be to do it's own self-healing and discovering of what needs to be healed.
